What is Your Prediction?

I am always on the lookout for literature books that lend themselves to teaching specific reading strategies.

I have a big book that has been the favorite of all favorites for all of my classes. I use it when I introduce predicting as a reading strategy.

The author is Joy Cowley. It's titled, Do Not Open This Book!  Isn't that intriguing? Of course, the children demand that the book be opened!

And the poor rat keeps trying to keep you from turning each page, warning you that something dreadful will happen if you do. Each page has further clues. So, the children keep making more predictions based on the visual clues. Perfect for first graders!

Children read it over and over again. Needless to say, my book is tattered and worn. I'm frequently mending it.

I say it's especially loved. I've had it for many years. Though I weed out worn out books at the end of each year, I just cannot part with this one. It's a reminder that our quest is to create lifelong readers. It's simply joyful seeing children so excited about reading!

I predict that someday I will get another copy of this book.

I'd love to hear about the literature books you use for teaching reading strategies.

Joyful reading to all of you.

  6. This looks like a great book, but I found it on Amazon for $44.52 (shipping is free!). Maybe it will come down in price in a bit? It says it is currently out of stock.

  9. This looks like a book I grew up loving. It was with Elmo and called The Monster at the End of this Book. I loved that book when I was little and still love it now. So excited that I found a copy of it but this book sounds like it would be great as well. I might have to look into getting a copy.
